Buddhist Funerals

Buddhist Funeral Services and Traditions

  • Services typically take place within a week of death.
  • Viewings take place one day before the funeral service, typically during the evening and usually includes candle lighting and incense.
  • Funeral services are typically held at a funeral home, not a temple.
  • At the funeral service, family greet those who come to pay their respects. Visitors then go to the casket and bow as a sign of honor and respect.
  • Funeral services are conducted by a monk. The casket will be open during the service and there will be a period of meditation during the ceremony to reflect on the person’s life and to honor their memory.
  • When ceremonies are complete, the casket is either taken to a cemetery to be buried or will be cremated. When being cremated, family will traditionally witness the cremation.  Marlatt Funeral Home has the facilities on site to accommodate witnessed cremations.
