Obituary for Ralph Newton

Ralph Milo Newton went home to be with the Lord on March 8, 2018. He was 88 years old. Ralph is survived by his wife, Marilyn M. Newton of Salem, Oregon and by his three sons and their wives, Dwight and Chris Newton, Michael and Denise Newton, Robert and Debbra Newton. Additionally, Yelena Barlysky, who Ralph loved, liked a daughter and her husband Peter, like another son. Ralph had 17 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren and 7 great-great grandchildren. Ralph had one desire for his family that each family member would walk with the Lord, all the days of their lives.

Ralph was born on March 26, 1929 in Hermiston, Oregon to Beula and Wilbur Newton. He grew up in the Blue Mountains of Oregon before moving to Portland, in the community of Sellwood. At the age of 8 years old, he met Marilyn Willing who he asked if she would someday marry him. On April 11 of 1949 they were planning on being married in Sellwood, when Ralph, who had been in transport from the Hawthorne Nevada munitions depot, was in a serious automobile accident in Salem, Oregon. The wedding party ended up taking place in the Salem hospital before Ralph was transported to the Bremerton Naval base for his next tour of duty.

Ralph joined the Merchant Marines when he was 16 years old and within weeks, served as a helmsman on a ship headed for China. He later joined the U.S. Marine Corp where he finished his GED and also completed certification of one year of college credit. He was promoted to the rank of Corporal upon his discharge.

Ralph was very studious throughout his life and loved to read. He also loved to write and to express his ideas on paper. His inquisitive nature was instrumental in helping him to learn the skill of heat-treating and metallurgy. As a result of his wife’s prodding, he applied for a position with Boeing Aerospace in Seattle, Washington and was greeted by the recruiter with the words, “Where have you been, we’ve been looking for someone like you!” While working many years at the Kent Space Center, he retired having achieved the prestigious status of “Master Craftsman of the Year” awarded in 1991.

After retirement, Ralph served as an independent volunteer Chaplin for more than 20 years where he ministered to the spiritual needs of the elderly at Talbot Center for Rehabilitation and Healthcare in Renton, WA. Throughout his life, he served the Lord by serving others. He served the Boy Scouts in his youth and later became a Scout Master. Recognizing the need for young men to become men of God, he assisted in setting up the Christian Service Brigade in Sellwood Baptist Church. He was known for bringing homeless people to the Newton residence where they could be clothed, bathed, fed, and assisted with their various needs. Their sons vividly remember the way that Ralph and Marilyn gave generously of their time and resources to honor the Lord while assisting a diverse population of those in need.

Ralph loved God’s creation and spent much time in the outdoors. He loved fishing with his family and feeding the neighborhood critters. He named each animal as if it were his own and found great joy in feeding and caring for them.

Ralph was a member of Galilee Baptist Church in Kent, Washington for many years where he found his greatest joy in tirelessly learning more about the Word of God and enjoyed the fellowship of other believers.

Services will be held on Thursday, March 15 at Galilee Baptist Church with viewing beginning at 8:30 a.m. and the service beginning at 9:30 a.m. Immediately following the service, there will be an escort to the Tahoma National Cemetery where he will be put to rest during an 11:30 a.m. graveside service. At 12:30 p.m. friends and family are invited and encouraged to join the family for a time of food, fellowship, and sharing memories at the church.
