"Norris Eugene Harrell, retired U.S. Army Colonel, passed away on November 12th at the age of ninety. Born in Monroe, Louisiana, December 14, 1926 to John Garrett Harrell and Cleda Chaffee Harrell, his father's job caused Norris to change schools 26 times before he graduated salutorian from Amite High School (Louisiana) in 1944. He then attended LSU Fall & Spring, 44-45, before entering the Armed Service. His military career included being enlisted in U.S. Navy (45-46), attending the U.S. Military Academy, West Point (46-50), active duty U.S. Army from (50-56), and U.S. Army Reserve (56-80). He also was an engineer for Sandia Corporation in Albuquerque (56-79) and Boeing in Seattle (80-88).
Married in Zurich Switzerland in May 53 to Kathryn "Jane" Griffith; a Department of Defense school teacher and principal. Jane preceded Norris in death in July 2015. Their three daughters and families include: Barbara Moreno, husband Cliff, granddaughter Kathryn and great-grandson Tyler; Rebecca Corder, husband Timothy, grandson David with his wife Stephanie and great-grandson Micah, and granddaughter Emily; and Karen Jasper, husband Mike, granddaughter Michelle Nelson with her husband Randy, and granddaughter Jessica.
Norris' fondest memories included his Army service in San Antonio Texas, his extensive travel with Jane, and spending time with his children and grandchildren. Norris' outgoing personality ensured he never met a stranger and his clear tenor voice will always be remembered singing his favorite song "My Way."
