John Meland was born in Hawley, Minnesota, but spent most of his life in Renton, Washington. His parents, Walt and Swish Meland, raised him to have a great love for the water, family, and food. He used that love to become an executive chef, working at some of the top establishments around Washington, including the Sheraton Hotel in Renton for thirteen years, the Flame Restaurant in Kirkland, the Silverdale Resort, and the Allyn Inn. He also worked at the Marriot in Prudel Bay, Alaska, where he enjoyed being surrounded by nature. John retired to Belfair, Washington, where he enjoyed living on the canal and having one of the best views in the state.
John always loved to laugh, and had a mischievous twinkle in his eye that he passed on to his sons, but he was also a fighter, and that fierce determination is something that anyone who knows his children sees he passed on to them too. His love for them kept him going, and we now turn to the love we have for him in return to comfort us as we say goodbye.
He was preceded in death by his parents Walt and Swish, and siblings Dick and Carolyn (Keno). He is survived by his brothers Dennis and Merle, his sisters Mollie and Marlea, and his children, Daryl Meland, J.J. Meland, Glen Ashford, Amanda Smith, and Dan Ashford, as well as his grandchildren, Dan Ashford III, Selena Ashford, Juliana Smith, Becca Smith, and Madelyn Meland.
