Obituary for Norma Dabling

Norma Dorothy Marie Dabling, age 83 of Covington WA graduated to heaven, May 27, 2018 at Tacoma General Hospital of cancer.
Norma was born October 30 in beautiful Johannesburg, South Africa, a daughter of Dorothea Johanna and Albert Sawyer. She left her beautiful home of South Africa for Salt Lake City when she was 21 years old hoping to meet the man of her dreams. Arriving in Salt Lake City Utah with $5 that remained in her pocket.
Almost immediately she had a job at the LDS Church Offices working with President Reuben J. Clark of the First Presidency, Elders Harold B. Lee and Marion D. Romney as well as the General Relief Society Presidency and members of the Council of the Twelve. And she loved it! Norma held many positions in the LDS Church including Young Women’s President, and Ward and Stake Relief Society President. She served eight years in a row as Young Women’s Camp Director. The girls adored her, and she adored them.
Remember how she came to SLC to find and marry the man of her dreams? Well she did and she did! She married Ken Heaps in September 1960 in the Salt Lake Temple. Life was busy with two young boys and their positions in the LDS church. Way too soon Norma lost her husband to cancer. Later she married the other man of her dreams, my dad Tom who had also lost his wife through cancer. They enjoyed life camping, skiing, playing tennis and raising the two boys.
If you know Norma, you knew she was a diehard sports fan and loved her Seahawks, Mariners, and Seattle Sonics, where two of her step daughters were original Sonics cheerleaders. She was her grandson’s (Jake) number one fan and loved watching his football career including being able to join the Seahawks team.
Norma is survived by her husband and two sons Steve (Shelisa) of Utah, Michael (Megan) of Seattle, stepdaughters Vonell Hatch (Sheryl) of Utah, Connie Riggle (Craig) of Arizona, Sue Randall (Mike) of Arizona, and stepson Kim Dabling of Washington. Norma and Tom had 16 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and more Stamp Em Up stamps than you can ever count.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 12 noon in the Kent Stake Center, with Bishop Mitchell of the Lake Meridian Ward officiating. Viewing will be held 11:00 a.m. in the Relief Society room.
Burial will be in the Springville Evergreen Cemetery in Springville, Utah Friday, June 8 at 1pm
