Obituary for Matthew Knape

Matthew Eugene Knape passed away peacefully in his sleep, at home, early in the morning on Memorial Day. He was born in Seattle, to Trenna Glee Thoman and Ace Leroy Smither on 02/14/57. He attended and graduated from Federal Way High School, Highline Community College and later PIMA Medical Institute. Shortly after graduating high school, he joined the Army and was stationed in Germany. He was in the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment Black Horse. After completing his service, he returned home and became a pressman. He enjoyed working with his brother Mark for many years at Rotary Offset Press and then working at The King County Journal and The Seattle Times. Later in life he pursued a career in the medical field and graduated from PIMA Medical Institute as a Medical Assistant. He started his medical assisting career at Swedish Medical Center in Sports Medicine. Following that he worked at an Overlake Urgent Care clinic and then found the job that ended up being the perfect fit for him at the University of Washington Medical Center Roosevelt campus. He loved his job, all his coworkers and especially the patients that he cared for.
Matt was a 5th degree black belt in Shorin-Ryu Karate and studied under Sensei Jerry Gould. He competed in and won many tournaments and enjoyed helping others with their karate training. He was a strong, dedicated and trusted mentor to many.
Matt and Linda married on July 25th, 1992 in Federal Way and were happily married for nearly 26 years. Their favorite place to travel together was Hawaii. He loved to travel and often talked about traveling to Europe again and visiting places he had been while in the army.
In 2005 Matt and Linda's niece, Rachel, came to live with them. This gave Matt something he had always wanted in life, to be a father. He taught her the life lessons she would need to be happy and successful and supported her dream of becoming an RN. Matt was the kind of person who genuinely cared for others and because of this, nearly everyone he encountered throughout his life became his friend. Up until his last day, he was still in contact with his childhood friends, who he grew up with. He also stayed in contact with coworkers/friends from every pressman and medical assistant job he had, throughout the last 40 years. Everyone who was his friend, was a friend for life.
Matt's parents have both passed away, Trenna in 1992 and Ace in 2017. He is survived by his wife Linda, Daughter Rachel, brothers Mark and Tim, sisters Kelly, Mikhael, Robin and Desiree, Linda's daughter Tina and her husband Brian.
