Obituary for Karen Lynn Peterson

Karen Lynn Peterson, 57, died unexpectedly at home on Monday, January 8, 2018. She was born in White Bear Lake, Minnesota on October 10, 1960 to Ellsworth “Pete” and Arlene (Unke) Peters, the eagerly awaited second daughter in a family of five children. Karen was nine when her family moved to Bellevue, Washington. She graduated from Newport High School in 1978.

In 1983 during Seattle’s Seafair weekend, Karen met Bryon Peterson on a blind date arranged by friends from work. They were married on September 21, 1985. The love they so obviously had for each other was beautiful to witness. Karen and Bryon lived in Kirkland, Washington before moving to Kent, Washington in 1995.

Karen worked her entire career in the insurance industry, where her sunny personality was a natural fit in customer service. She spent many years at Great West Life Assurance Company, attaining a position of Field Office Manager. She earned her PHR Certification in Human Resources in 2007. At the time of her passing she was working at Gallagher Benefit Services, Inc. in Bellevue, Washington.

Karen was a blessing to everyone who knew her. Her giggles were so genuine and contagious and her smile could light up the room. She was generous in spirit and gave the best hugs. Karen was God-mother to her niece, Andrea Richards and her nephew, Corbin Sikes.

Artistic by nature, Karen loved to knit. Many family members were lucky to receive her beautiful creations: warm hats, vests, scarves, baby hats and blankets. Karen also had made items for cancer patients and newborn babies. She loved creating hand crafted cards with her longtime friend, Kim Brewer, whom she had known since 5th grade. Karen never missed going to the Bellevue Arts & Crafts Fair with her sister Gayle. Every year they came home with new inspiration. She was also a very adventurous cook, treating Bryon and family to many wonderful meals throughout the years.

Karen and Bryon enjoyed concerts in the local parks, attending Mariners and Seahawk games and traveling together. They had enjoyed trips to Mexico, Hawaii, North Carolina and Arizona for spring training. Trips to the Pacific Coast accompanied by their dog Jessica, and later their dog Molly, were their favorites. After living in the shadow of Mount Rainier since 1995, Karen and Bryon finally visited Paradise this past summer and were moved by the beauty of their surroundings.

Karen is preceded in death by her parents Ellsworth “Pete” & Arlene Peters, and her parent-in-laws Lloyd Peterson and Carol Francis. She is survived by her husband, Bryon Peterson, her sister Diane Richards and husband Mark, her brothers James Peters and his wife Elizabeth, Thomas Peters and his wife Kaylene, her sister Gayle Sikes and her husband Randy, her sister-in-law Linda Zerbano, and her brother-in-law Greg Travis. She leaves behind eight nieces, six nephews, and five grand-nieces and two grand-nephews.

May she rest in peace knowing that we love her beyond measure. She is forever in our hearts.

Funeral services will be held on January 17, 2018 at 11:00am at King of Kings Lutheran Church, 18207 108th Ave SE, Renton, WA 98055. Interment will be at Hillcrest Burial Park in Kent, WA.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Karen’s memory to Knit for Life at knitforlife.org
